San Diego's food scene is a blend of diverse flavors and culinary innovation, making it a world-class destination for food lovers. From Michelin-rated delicacies to farm-to-table delights, the city's vibrant gastronomic landscape offers something for every unique palate. With an abundance of craft breweries and trendy eateries, San Diego is a paradise for food enthusiasts seeking delectable experiences that reflect the city's laid-back coastal charm.

Raised by Wolves

Interior of Raised by Wolves

Raised by Wolves is on the top of my list of amazing bars in San Diego. I am an absolute sucker for a speakeasy-style bar, so when our reservations came up for this I was ecstatic. You enter what appears to be a 1920's liquor store, however, after checking in with the host you are seated near the fireplace. Here, you are taken to a secret world. The fireplace turns you around until you are fully immersed in the beautifully-decorated (and well-hidden) bar space.

The cocktail selection here exceeded my expectations taste-wise, and every beverage ordered was presented beautifully. I cannot express enough how intimate the space feels and how beautifully done the interior is. Even the restroom was something to marvel at, with twinkling stars on the ceiling and gold-etched sinks. Be sure to reserve ahead of time, but add this to your list next time you are in the San Diego area. You will not be disappointed!

World Curry

World Curry has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. My aunt and uncle had a house on Mission Bay and I would look forward to coming to eat here with them every single time I would visit. The interior is nothing fancy, but the dishes are guaranteed to leave you coming back for more.

(Pictured: Curry dishes and iced coffee.)

The name explains the restaurant very well, as the premise of this establishment is to give you an opportunity to try various curry dishes from all over the globe. My personal favorite is the Thai panang curry, however there is not a single curry that I have tried here that I did not like.

The Realm of 52 Remedies

(Pictured: Outside of and interior of the Apothecary.)

The Realm of 52 Remedies is hidden inside of Common Theory, and was an exceptional treat for an evening out. Much like Raised by Wolves, this is a speakeasy-style bar with a hidden entrance. You are first guided into an all white room called the Apothecary. Here you can smell a strong blend of herbs and spices, preparing you for the experience ahead. You are told to approach the door and touch the white letter to enter the Realm.

Beyond the door are a curtain of flowers and this unique display, before you step further into the main bar area. I would have to say, everything was beautifully presented from the moment you enter. We have visited several speakeasies, and this was one of the most unique.

(Pictured: Inside the Realm.)

Once you get inside the Realm, you really do feel as if you have been transported to another world. The seating areas were comfortable and beautifully done. Large beaded fixtures hang from the ceilings, and the dim lighting really adds to the ambiance. The music is loud enough to drown out the guests near you, but quiet enough to still hold a conversation.

Both cocktails we ordered here were beautifully presented and offered very unique flavors. I enjoyed that they offered a rotating seasonal menu of drinks, as well as their year-round options. We ordered some spicy tuna crispy rice here that was delicious. They serve full entrees as well, however we had dinner prior to coming here for drinks.

Every now and then you find a restroom that really blows your mind. The Realm of 52 Remedies really under-hyped their restroom experience. The music is the loudest in here, and the mirrored ceiling features these neon blue lights pictured above. If the bar area is called the Realm, I think they need to find a separate name for when you enter their restroom!

False Idol Tiki Bar

(Pictured: Interior of False Idol Tiki Bar.)

False Idol Tiki Bar can be found within the Craft & Commerce bar. This intimate (and meticulously designed) tiki bar brings you into a world of exotic cocktails and Polynesian-inspired decor. With its dimly lit ambiance and tropical vibes, False Idol creates a sense of stepping into another place entirely. The menu here is quite extensive, and offers a unique beverage for every palate. My only complaint would be that most of the drinks were about 70% ice.

InsideOUT

(Pictured: Mimosas at InsideOUT.)

Brunch at InsideOUT in San Diego is an absolute delight and a must-try experience. Located in the heart of Hillcrest, this trendy restaurant offers a perfect blend of delectable cuisine, inviting ambiance, and wonderful LGBTQ-friendly service!

(Pictured: Courtyard of InsideOUT.)

You'll be impressed by the chic and modern decor once you enter the restaurant, which is complemented by a spacious and vibrant outdoor patio complete with a small waterfall. Sometimes they have seasonal installations in this courtyard, adding to the fun and appeal of the experience. The atmosphere is lively yet relaxed, making it an ideal spot to enjoy a leisurely brunch with friends or family. The food and drinks were delicious, and the overall experience was a lovely start to the day.

One thing I would like to note is that this place has extremely unique bathrooms. The hand-washing areas and men's urinals face the street and can be seen by spectators walking by. It is cleverly done, but it is a very notable restroom experience to say the least.

Whether you're a local looking for a new favorite brunch spot or a visitor seeking a fun and memorable brunch experience in San Diego, InsideOUT is a fantastic choice.

Kono's Cafe

(Pictured: Breakfast at Kono's Cafe.)

Kono's Cafe in San Diego is a hidden gem for breakfast! With its pierfront location, it offers a casual and laid-back atmosphere for an easygoing morning near the beach. Their menu features tasty breakfast and lunch options, and this is my go-to for breakfast in Pacific Beach.

(Pro Tip: Across from the cafe is a hidden seating area overlooking the ocean. It is absolutely necessary to find a spot here to eat, you will thank me later!)

Pushkin

(Pictured: Food from Pushkin.)

Pushkin was the first Russian restaurant experience I ever had. The establishment is named after a famous Russian poet, and we ended up naming our cat Pushkin shortly after dining here. This is a great stop in the San Diego area to try some authentic Russian cuisine, including borscht.

Pomegranate

Pomegranate is also another great spot to try some authentic Russian cuisine. This particular restaurant specializes in Russian-Georgian cuisine, including katchipuri. This place is usually quite busy and requires a wait, but the food is super authentic and delicious! The interior walls are covered with writing from guests that have dined before - etched in a unique blend of English and Russian.

Sushi Ota

(Pictured: Inside Sushi Ota.)

Dining at Sushi Ota in San Diego reminded me of what every sushi experience should be like. The restaurant features an elegant yet simple interior, and the sushi itself was fresh and well-presented. From traditional favorites to innovative creations, each dish was fresh and tasted wonderfully. The only issue I have with this place is that it is next to impossible to eat here without planning ahead. This obviously set my expectations extremely high, however, there was nothing that really blew me away about this place.

Herb & Sea

(Pictured: Dining at Herb & Sea.)

Herb & Sea is located in Encinitas and offers a delightful dining experience that combines the ambiance of coastal charm with top-quality culinary excellence. The restaurant's chic and relaxed atmosphere sets the stage for a memorable meal. This is a lovely location for a date night, as their outdoor patio is simply beautiful. The cocktails were tasty, and you need to order the hamachi crudo along with your meal!

Bobboi Natural Gelato

(Pictured: Enjoying Bobboi Natural Gelato in La Jolla.)

Although Bobboi Natural Gelato has a few locations, this is my go-to stop for a sweet treat while walking around La Jolla. They offer a delicious variety of unique gelato flavors that always leave me impressed every time. I rarely have to wait when stopping by here as well. If you are a fan of gelato, then this is a must-try!

Salt & Straw

Salt & Straw is another San Diego establishment with multiple locations, and is a superior ice cream establishment to their competitors. They offer a honey lavender flavor that is to die for, and they also have a unique offering of seasonal flavors as well. During our last visit, my boyfriend tried a mango habanero IPA sorbet that was surprisingly good, as shocking as the flavor combination may sound. Be aware though, this place often has a line out the door!

Pannikin Coffee

Coffee and pastries from Pannikin.

Pannikin Coffee is a charming coffee spot that captures the essence of a rustic retreat. The cozy and eclectic atmosphere invites patrons to unwind with a cup of their rich, aromatic brews. The cafe itself is in a building that was originally a railroad station, adding a touch of history to this unique coffee shop. This is a lovely place to sit outside and enjoy a coffee and a pastry while in the San Diego area.

Casa De Reyes

(Pictured: Food and drink at Casa De Reyes.)

Walking into Casa de Reyes in Old Town San Diego is reminiscent of stepping into a vibrant fiesta! The restaurant's festive and colorful ambiance creates a lively and welcoming atmosphere. The menu showcases a delectable array of authentic Mexican dishes, from sizzling fajitas to mouthwatering tacos. With occasional live music and friendly staff, Casa de Reyes promises a memorable and flavorful dining experience that celebrates the rich heritage of Old Town San Diego. When my mother is in town, this is our go-to while spending the afternoon exploring the area.

Todo Sushi

(Pictured: Dining at Todo Sushi.)

Dining at Todo Sushi is our family's favorite- this is typically our go-to for a family gathering. Todo Sushi boasts a diverse menu, featuring an impressive selection of fresh and creatively crafted sushi rolls. The rolls themselves also offer an impressive amount of fish, compared to other sushi places I have eaten at. The attentive service only adds to the experience, and it is a must-visit spot for anyone craving a satisfying and delicious sushi feast.

Joe's Crab Shack

(Pictured: Drinks and bibs from Joe's Crab Shack.)

The Joe's Crab Shack location in Oceanside offers a fun and casual dining experience with a beachy vibe, and is another great spot for a family gathering. The restaurant's waterfront location sets the perfect backdrop for enjoying their classic seafood favorites. From mouthwatering crab legs to flavorful shrimp dishes, the menu boasts a tempting selection of ocean delights- complete with a bib. The lively atmosphere, friendly staff, and tasty seafood make Joe's Crab Shack a great spot for a relaxed and enjoyable meal by the sea. Don't worry, they provide hand-wipes as well!
