Opening day at the Del Mar horse races has become a tradition of ours since we went for the first time in 2021. These races are quite the spectacle that captivates the hearts of both seasoned equestrian enthusiasts and first-time attendees alike.

Although the races run in Del Mar until about September, opening day in Del Mar is a particularly special event. The Del Mar racetrack- with its iconic palm trees and vibrant atmosphere- comes to life with a kaleidoscope of colors as the crowd shows up in their finest attire. With styles ranging from stylish hats to dapper suits, dressing in your sharpest attire is a tradition for opening day at the races. Each year they host a competition for who has the best hat as well, if you were feeling extra-creative and wanted to enter.

Before each race begins, spectators are free to roam the grounds, and take a look at the horses before they race. Many people stand here to look at the horses and make their pick, then hurry to place their bets before the race begins. When you enter the racetrack, you are given a schedule of races for the day, but each race goes about every 20-30 minutes. Throughout the day, the betting booths and stands buzz with anticipation and the races finish in quick succession. This creates a thrilling experience for spectators, who are often jumping up from their seats at the excitement.

(Pro Tip: Tickets for general admission and the seating booths tend to sell out right away, so be sure you know when tickets go on sale if you wanted to attend. It can also get quite hot during this event, as it is held in July, so be prepared and be sure to drink plenty of water.)

Opening day at Del Mar is not just a celebration of horse racing, but it is also a social event that brings together a diverse and enthusiastic community. It is an event that I would recommend you get dressed up and go to at least once. Who knows, maybe you'll even try your luck and win big!
