Anza-Borrego Desert State Park spans over 600,000 acres and features a diverse landscape featuring rugged canyons, sweeping vistas, and lovely desert flora. Visitors are treated to a unique blend of outdoor adventures, from hiking through slot canyons to stargazing under the clear night sky.

Driving into Anza-Borrego from Montezuma Highway offers a captivating journey through the arid landscapes of Southern California. As you wind your way along this scenic route, the terrain gradually transitions from rocky hills to vast desert expanses. If you are able to, make sure you take this route down into Anza-Borrego. I think this is one of the most lovely drives in Southern California.

Galleta Meadows

Galleta Meadows is known for its unique collection of metal sculptures that were created by artist Ricardo Breceda. These sculptures, including the iconic serpent head, add a touch of intrigue to the desert landscape. Galleta Meadows offers visitors the opportunity to explore this artistic marvel, showcasing the creative fusion of metalwork with the natural beauty of the desert surroundings. These statues are scattered around Anza-Borrego, but there are many maps online indicating where they all are. Here are some of the highlights:

The Serpent

The Serpent at Anza-Borrego.

This is one of the ones I would make a point to stop at. This huge serpent extends across the road, and is really a marvel in this beautiful desert landscape.

Slot Canyon

The Slot Canyon in Anza-Borrego was carved over millennia by the forces of wind and water. This narrow and twisting canyon offers an enchanting and intimate adventure for explorers. The canyon's narrow passageways and sculpted rock formations invite you to navigate through tight spaces and marvel at the intricate patterns etched into the stone, this is also a welcome break into the shade from the hot desert sun. Be sure to bring plenty of water, but this is a super cool hike for the whole family.

Wildflowers

In Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the annual wildflower bloom transforms the arid landscape into a vibrant tapestry of colors. If the year had a lot of rain, Anza-Borrego is also the site of rare superblooms.

Super Blooms

Super blooms are a rare and captivating spectacle that brings the arid desert to life in a dazzling explosion of color. During these extraordinary events, which occur only under specific weather conditions, the desert floor is blanketed with an exuberant display of wildflowers. Millions of vibrant blossoms, in hues ranging from golden yellows to deep purples, stretch as far as the eye can see, creating an almost surreal landscape that defies the desolate reputation of the desert. Walking through Anza-Borrego's super bloom feels like stepping into a dream, where the desert's harshness gives way to a stunning and delicate tapestry of life. It's a reminder of nature's resilience and ability to create breathtaking beauty, even in the most unlikely of places. Find more information on Anza-Borrego's superblooms and more here:

Julian

(Pictured: Along the drive to Julian.)

Julian is a charming mountain town nestled in the Cuyamaca Mountains of Southern California. Julian is most famous for its apple orchards and homemade apple pies. In the fall, visitors flock to the town to partake in apple picking and savor the delicious pies. The town itself is small, but has a quaint charm all it's own. Mother's has an amazing cinnamon ice cream that is worth the wait on its own. In the springtime, daffodils bloom along the grass-covered hills and it is overall a quiet and relaxing place to spend the afternoon.

Due to their close proximity, you can spend the morning over in Anza-Borrego and then head over to Julian in the afternoon. Don't forget to bring a pie home as well!
