North Algodones Dunes Wilderness Area.

The Glamis Sand Dunes are located at the southernmost end of Southern California. They are a breathtaking natural wonder that span over 40 miles across the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area. I may be biased in my opinion, but sand dunes always mesmerize me and I find them to be so beautiful. These dunes, formed over thousands of years, can tower up to 300 feet in height and are worth the visit for their sheer size and majestic beauty. This area is a popular spot for adventurers, off-road enthusiasts, and even photographers.

Please note the area that we visited, and that is the best to walk around, was called the North Algodones Dunes Wilderness area. This area is north of the 78 and to my understanding there are no vehicles allowed in this section of the dunes. The southern side of the 78, is where you park and will see everyone riding on their ATV-type vehicles. You will not need me to tell you that this area is not safe for walking.

Visitors can explore the dunes by walking along them, but we also brought a plastic trash can lid to try and slide down the dunes. Some research needs to be done on how to get them to slide in the sand a little faster for next time, but it was still fun for my daughter. The dunes were covered with tiny sand geckos and blooming with desert sand verbana. I was even blessed with the chance to see one of the rare dune sunflowers that I had read about prior to my visit.

It was a long drive down to Glamis, and it also gets hot and windy. Bring plenty of water and supplies just in case. We stopped at the Glamis Sand Dunes after a day at the Salton Sea. From where we live, I would not say these dunes are worth the long drive alone, unless you plan to bring some sort of off-roading vehicle for sand sports. However, it was a full and fun day when visiting the Salton Sea. Here are some things to do while visiting the Salton Sea if you choose to do so:
