Solvang is a charming Danish-inspired town nestled in the heart of California's Santa Ynez Valley. For how small it is in size, it is a picturesque destination that is bursting with Old World charm. With its iconic windmills and Danish-style architecture, Solvang offers visitors a delightful blend of Danish culture, delectable pastries, and a relaxed, cozy atmosphere.

I was under the impression that everyone knew about Solvang, but maybe it is still a hidden gem for Californian's. It is by no means a world destination, but it is such a charming town that I would say it is worth the stop at least once (or twice!) I would say it's worth the drive alone for the pastries, but maybe that's just me! Here are some of my favorite stops while in Solvang:

Mortensen's Danish Bakery

I am not joking when I say that Mortensen's alone is worth the stop in Solvang. I have driven out here just to pick up a box of pastries before and regret nothing. Mortensen's Danish Bakery is a charming haven for pastry lovers. With its rich heritage and warm hospitality, Mortensen's Danish Bakery captures the essence of Denmark's culinary traditions and delights visitors with its mouth watering selection of pastries.
As you step inside Mortensen's, you'll be greeted by the enticing aroma of freshly baked pastries and a beautiful glass display of their best items. Here, you'll discover an impressive selection of Danish pastries that showcase the craftsmanship and artistry of this time-honored culinary tradition. I would also like to note that the staff here is wonderful, so don't be afraid to ask questions! Indulge in flaky and buttery pastries, such as the iconic kringle—a delicate pastry filled with ingredients like almond paste, fruit compote, or cinnamon. One thing you absolutely have to try here are their pistachio bars. I make sure to order at least a dozen every time, as they last while in the fridge (or can even be frozen!) I have never had a pastry anywhere else like this in my life, I can't even find a recipe that is close. They are heavenly, I promise you! Another highlight would include their marzipan horns, which are dipped in chocolate.
Whether you're a connoisseur of Danish pastries or simply seeking a taste of something extraordinary, Mortensen's Danish Bakery in Solvang offers a delightful journey into the world of Danish delights. It's a place where time-honored recipes, artisanal craftsmanship, and warm hospitality combine to create a memorable experience that will keep you coming back to Solvang for more.

Dana V. Wines

Dana V Wines is a small boutique winery that offers a delightful tasting experience. With a focus on small-batch, handcrafted wines, Dana V Wines invites visitors to savor their exceptional vintages made from locally sourced grapes. This charming winery provides a warm and intimate setting to indulge in the rich flavors of the Santa Ynez Valley. They have a lovely outdoor seating area with covered tables and chairs. We enjoyed spending the afternoon sipping wine and feeling the breeze on our faces.
Mission Santa Ynez
(Pictured: On the grounds of Mission Santa Ynez.)
Mission Santa Ynez is a historic and picturesque Spanish mission. I wouldn't say it's worth the trip on its own, but it is a cool stop during your walk through the town of Solvang. History has always intrigued me, so the missions have always piqued my interest in some way. Founded in 1804, the mission boasts beautiful classic mission architecture, including a bell tower and a lovely courtyard. Visitors can explore the mission grounds, learn about its rich history, and appreciate the tranquil beauty of this piece of California history.
Andersen's (Buellton)
(Pictured: Pea soup and interior of Andersen's.)
Although this is not in Solvang, you will most likely pass it on your way in. In fact, by the time you get to the area, you will have seen about 100 billboards advertising their famous pea soup. Andersen's offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere where visitors can indulge in a bowl of this iconic soup- a comforting treat that has been cherished by locals and travelers for decades. They even sell it in cans, if you would like to bring a souvenir home with you! Whether you're a fan of pea soup, or simply seeking a pleasant stop for lunch and a restroom break, Andersen's in Buellton is a perfect stop near Solvang.
Nojoqui Falls
(Pictured: By Nojoqui Falls.)
Nojoqui Falls is about 15 minutes from Solvang and is a hidden gem that attracts visitors with its natural beauty. This lovely waterfall cascades down a moss-covered rock face, creating a mesmerizing display of flowing water and serene tranquility. The hike to Nojoqui Falls takes you through a peaceful trail shaded by oak trees and native vegetation. Please note to get to the falls, you are technically going past a fence that tells you to not go any further. The first time I came here I almost turned around, until I saw several families step over the fence and continue on their way. Reaching the falls, you'll be greeted by a breathtaking sight—a curtain of water gracefully descending from the rocks above.
Depending on when you visit, the falls are sometimes just a thin stream of water. At other times, as pictured above, it produces quite a large amount of water. The falls hold cultural and historical significance as well, as it used to be a sacred site for the Chumash people, who have long revered the falls as a place of spiritual connection. Visiting Nojoqui Falls offers an opportunity to connect with nature and hopefully even cool off on a hot day.
