Chicago, Illinois, is also referred to as the "Windy City," and it mesmerizes visitors with its stunning architecture, cultural richness, and bustling city life. From the iconic skyline along Lake Michigan to world-class museums, art galleries, and theaters, Chicago captivates with its deep-dish pizza, prohibition history, sports passion, and surprisingly romantic atmosphere. This was one of the first trips my boyfriend and I ever took together, and since then I have referred to Chicago as the "City of Romance." Paris, who? Come discover a city that seamlessly blends history, creativity, and urban energy all in one beautiful location.

Both times we have been to Chicago, there has been no need to rent a car. Public transportation in Chicago is renowned for its efficiency and extensive network, and can bring you into the city directly from Chicago O'Hare International Airport. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) operates an integrated system of buses and "L" trains, covering the city and its suburbs. With frequent schedules and well-connected routes, commuters and tourists can easily navigate Chicago's bustling streets and iconic landmarks using this reliable public transit system.
In addition to this, the city is also well-equipped with a bike-rental system. Divvy bike-sharing in Chicago offers a convenient and eco-friendly way to explore the city, and removes any need for a car as long as you plan on staying in Chicago. With numerous docking stations located throughout the city, users can easily rent and return bikes at their leisure. Our first trip here, we spent a whole day biking to the various sights; it really made getting around easy and enjoyable (as long as weather permits).

Sunrise and sunset in Chicago are both breathtaking moments that paint this remarkable city in stunning hues. There is an element of excitement to watching the sun come and go in a new place, and the Chicago cityscape takes on a magical aura as the sun begins to change in the sky.

Chicago also features an impressive street art scene that continually surprises, offering fascinating visuals while exploring the city. Be sure to keep an eye out for all sorts of unique art installations.

Millenium Park

Millennium Park is a vibrant and iconic urban park located in the heart of Chicago. Spanning 24.5 acres, it offers an array of attractions and is a must-visit place to walk around. Visitors can marvel at the famous Cloud Gate sculpture, known as "The Bean," take in the beauty of the Lurie Garden, and enjoy live music at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. The park's fountains, bridges, and sculptures, add to its allure. Millennium Park serves as a cultural hub for the city, hosting various events and festivals, making it a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists alike.

Cloud Gate or "The Bean"
Cloud Gate, also affectionately referred to as "The Bean," is a striking and iconic sculpture located in Millennium Park. Designed by artist Anish Kapoor, it is a masterpiece of contemporary art and engineering. The Bean's polished stainless steel surface reflects the city's skyline and its visitors, creating captivating and distorted reflections. This unique sculpture invites people to walk underneath, touch its smooth surface, and capture photos on its reflection. Cloud Gate has become a beloved landmark and a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the city. Please note that the first time we visited this area was during COVID-19, which is why there is nobody next to the bean at this time.
The Lurie Garden
(Pictured: Exploring Lurie Garden.)
Lurie Garden in Chicago is a serene urban oasis nestled within Millennium Park. This 2.5-acre garden showcases a harmonious blend of native plants and perennial blooms. Both times I have visited in October, they have had blooms of Japanese anemones! Visitors can escape the city's hustle and bustle in the peaceful ambiance of this hidden garden, while the Chicago skyline decorates the view above. When the sun is close to setting, I find this area particularly romantic.

Chicago is a unique and beautiful city visually, and I believe part of this is due to its close proximity to the water. Not only is Chicago along the shores of Lake Michigan, but a river runs through the city itself, creating beautiful views all across the Windy City.
The Chicago Riverwalk

The Chicago Riverwalk is a lovely urban promenade that meanders alongside the Chicago River, offering a scenic and dynamic experience in the heart of the city. Stretching for 1.25 miles, it features a series of beautifully designed paths, parks, and recreational areas for visitors to enjoy. One thing I would like to note is that Chicago is pretty clean for a big city, especially in comparison to New York. Of course it has its moments, as any big city does, but I would say it is one of the nicest big cities I have traveled to so far.
(Pictured: Walking along the Chicago Riverwalk.)
On the riverwalk, visitors can stroll along the river's edge while enjoying stunning views of the city's iconic architecture and bustling boat traffic. The Riverwalk also boasts a variety of cafes, restaurants, and outdoor seating, creating a perfect setting to savor a meal or unwind with a drink. Whether it is day or night, the Chicago Riverwalk exudes a vibrant atmosphere, making it a popular destination for anyone seeking to soak in the charm and energy of this magnificent urban space. Back to Chicago being the city of romance, I fall in love every single time I step foot on the riverwalk.
Adler Planetarium

Walking by the water at Adler Planetarium in Chicago is a serene and mesmerizing experience. When we rode our bikes to this area, I thought the lakefronts' beauty was comparable to the ocean. With Lake Michigan's shimmering blue waters on one side and the city's striking skyline on the other, it's a picturesque setting. We noticed this was a common area to take wedding photos as well, adding to the romantic atmosphere, but it was a beautiful stop for any occasion. We did not make it into the planetarium itself, however, this was just a beautiful viewpoint of the city!

Wendella Boat Tours
(Pictured: On the Wendella Boat Tour.)
If you are in Chicago, I would highly recommend the Wendella Boat Tour. It promises an up-close experience of the city's architectural wonders and scenic beauty, while also taking you out on the lake to view the skyline from a distance.
The boat features an open-air seating deck, where you're treated to unobstructed views of the iconic skyline along the Chicago River during your tour. The guide shares stories about the city's history and architectural marvels as you glide through the waterways. Passing under historic bridges, you marvel at the diverse styles of buildings that define Chicago's famous skyline. The tour then takes you to Lake Michigan, offering breathtaking views of the city from a unique vantage point you would not find within the city.
Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park offers a delightful escape from the bustling city if you were looking to get away. Encompassing 1,208 acres, it is one of the largest and most cherished parks in the city. With lush landscapes, vast green fields, and tree-lined paths, this park creates a serene atmosphere that is perfect for leisurely walks and picnics. Visitors can explore the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool or the Lincoln Park Conservatory while they are visiting this large park.
Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo is a tranquil 14-acre urban ecosystem offers a harmonious blend of wildlife, native plants, and artistic elements. Strolling along the boardwalk, visitors can spot ducks, turtles, and other wildlife thriving in their natural habitat, a welcome sight in a large city. This is a lovely place for a quiet stroll, I cannot wait to come back here.
North Avenue Beach in Chicago is a lively and popular lakeside destination. Its sandy shores, crystal-clear waters, and breathtaking views of the city skyline attract sun-seekers and beach enthusiasts alike. With an array of amenities, water sports, and beachside cafes, it's the perfect spot to bask in the sun, play volleyball, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Chicago's lakefront.

The Concrete Beach

This one is pretty self explanatory: its a beach, there is concrete instead of sand. It is a beautiful view, however!
Navy Pier

Stretching over 3,000 feet, Navy Pier offers a plethora of attractions and activities for all ages. From the famous Ferris wheel, providing stunning views of the city skyline, to the family-friendly rides and games at the amusement park, there's something here for everyone. The pier also features diverse dining options, waterfront restaurants, and live entertainment venues, making it a vibrant hub for leisure and entertainment in Chicago.
360 Chicago

360 Chicago, formerly known as the John Hancock Observatory, is an observation deck located on the 94th floor of the 875 North Michigan Avenue building in Chicago. Offering breathtaking panoramic views, it provides an unparalleled perspective of the city's skyline, Lake Michigan, and beyond. The observation deck features floor-to-ceiling windows and "TILT," a thrilling attraction that tilts visitors outward for an adrenaline-pumping view of the city below, if you were looking for an extra thrill. There is also a rooftop bar that also served sorbet, which I found thrilling enough. If you have time while in Chicago, I would highly recommend going here for unbeatable views.

Milton Lee Olive Park

Milton Lee Olive Park is a park that is somewhat hidden next to Chicago's lakefront. Nestled between Navy Pier and Ohio Street Beach, this serene 17-acre park offers stunning views of Lake Michigan and the city skyline. It offers lush green spaces, walking paths, and secluded alcoves that create a tranquil oasis, perfect for relaxation and escaping the urban bustle for a few moments.
The Chicago Marathon and 5K
(Pictured: The Chicago Airport before the Chicago Marathon.)
Running events in Chicago are an integral part of the city's culture and often showcase iconic landmarks, making them memorable and rewarding experiences for participants of all fitness levels. In October 2021, we participated in the Chicago 5K and then my boyfriend ran in the Chicago Marathon the next day.
(Pro Tip: If you find yourself in Chicago during the marathon, please plan ahead. This city is absolutely packed with people at this time, and I was feeling really grateful for making all of our dinner reservations in advance!)
The Chicago 5K

Running the Chicago 5K was an unforgettable experience, combining the thrill of a race with the picturesque backdrop of the city. The route took us through neighborhoods and the streets of Chicago, adding a sense of excitement and motivation to the run. At the finish line, there were wonderful photo opportunities between the towering buildings. It is such a unique experience to be able to run through these famous streets with absolutely no traffic.
(Pictured: Photos from the Chicago 5K.)
Visiting Chicago during the marathon was an exhilarating and memorable experience. My boyfriend was participating in the race, and the city's vibrant energy and the camaraderie among fellow runners created an electrifying atmosphere. The race started early, but all of the streets were closed creating an unforgettable sunrise along the empty streets. This was an excellent and unique opportunity to explore the streets of Chicago with no traffic. The only traffic at this time was on the sidewalks, filled with spectators throughout the day cheering runners on.

The marathon itself finishes in Millennium Park, and the air has a buzz of excitement from the day's events. This was an exciting experience, and a wonderful accomplishment for my boyfriend.
